Amid ongoing political instability, diplomatic tensions, and security concerns, the uncertainty surrounding Iran’s participation in the upcoming Football World Cup has been clearly resolved by Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA. In a statement given on Tuesday (March 31), he explicitly confirmed that Iran will participate in the World Cup as scheduled. This information was reported by Al Jazeera.
According to the World Cup schedule, most of Iran’s group-stage matches are set to be held in the United States. However, the situation became complicated earlier this month when former U.S. President Donald Trump remarked that, given the current circumstances, it might not be appropriate for Iran to participate in the tournament, considering the personal safety and security risks faced by players. His comments sparked widespread discussion and criticism internationally, raising doubts about Iran’s participation.
Following Trump’s remarks, Iran began making strong efforts to shift their matches to Mexico as an alternative venue. They expressed reluctance to play in the United States and emphasized security concerns in pushing for relocation. At the same time, last week Iran’s Ministry of Sports issued a directive advising national teams to avoid traveling to countries considered “hostile.”
Although the directive did not explicitly mention the Football World Cup, the context led to significant uncertainty regarding Iran’s participation. As a result, confusion spread among football stakeholders, supporters, and analysts about whether Iran would actually take part in the tournament.
However, following the recent statement by Gianni Infantino, the situation has become much clearer. His firm assurance has largely eased concerns, and it is now widely believed that Iran will indeed participate in the World Cup as scheduled.
